The South Wedge Mission is a neighborhood worshipping community rooted in the Lutheran, Episcopal and Catholic Worker traditions.
At SWM, we believe liturgy is the work of the people which means we're gathered together to co-create. To participate. To produce. And not just consume.
We follow the ancient liturgy of the church through call and response chanting, scripture readings, homily and a weekly Eucharist. Our bulletin is co-created weekly by our Liturgy Guild, typically following the lectionary. We also seek to perform fresh improvisations on ancient themes by drawing from a variety of ancient and contemporary sources.
Each week, following the homily, there's a time of Open Space, where we invite quiet and contemplation to respond to the Word with all of our five senses: making art, writing prayers, reading poetry and other spiritual practices. Music is an integral part of worship at SWM and you'll hear a mixture of traditional hymns with African American spirituals and improvisation. As our voices speak individually and collectively, you'll find that the emphasis is less about perfection and more about communing together with God and one another.
